Bio
In 2021, Bill finished his 24th year in Professional Baseball and fifth year with the Detroit Tigers Organization. He was personally responsible for coaching and mentoring Spencer Torkelson, the number one pick overall in the 2020 Major League draft. He served from 2017-2021 as hitting coach of the Class A Advanced Midwest League West Michigan Whitecaps.
Before working for the Tigers, Bill served as Major League Hitting Coach in 2017 in Taiwan with the Chinese Professional Baseball League. In 2015 Springman served as 'Senior Hitting Advisor' for the World Champion Kansas City Royals. He had previously worked for 14 seasons with the Minnesota Twins. Nine of those years Bill was the Twins Minor League 'Hitting Coordinator' and had additional duties for six seasons as Minor League 'Mental Skills' Coach. Bill was responsible for compiling and systematizing the Minor League hitting manuals for both the Royals and the Twins.
At that time, Springman mentored MLB players, Eddie Rosario, Ben Revere, Brian Dozier, Denard Span, Trevor Plouffe, Aaron Hicks, Miguel Sano, Byron Buxton, among many others. He also served as Twins Hitting Coach at Class AAA Salt Lake City from 1997-2000. During his time at Salt Lake City, he coached a range of top players early in their career such as Torii Hunter, David "Big Papi" Ortiz, A.J. Pierzynski, Doug Mientkiewicz, Mike Cuddyer, Casey Blake, Jacque Jones, to name a few. He served again as the Minnesota Twins AAA Hitting Coach at Class AAA Rochester in 2005.
Bill was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1st Round of the 1977 Secondary Phase Free Agent Draft. He played Shortstop on 'Team USA' during the 1977 'World Cup Games' in Nicaragua. He was named 'Sporting News' First Team College All-American Shortstop in 1978 as well as 'Sporting News' Minor League Class A Shortstop of the Year in 1979.
Bill was 'Associate Head Coach' of the 1992 NCAA Division I National Champions at Pepperdine University. He was 'Manager' and led the Harwich Mariners of the prestigious Cape Cod League to the Championship in 1987. He was 'Associate Head Coach' of the 1985 NBC National Champion Liberal Bee Jays in the NBC Summer league. He coached Union High School to the 6A State Championship in 2005.
Bill is a 1985 graduate of the University of Oklahoma with a bachelor's degree in physical education. He also earned a master's degree in education at Azusa Pacific University in 1996. He and wife Rexann of 45 years reside in Tulsa, OK. They have three children, Slater, Sheridan, and Sutton.
